ABOUT

Yemayá / Yemojá Ibu Asesu is an ederly road of Yemojá, although not as old as Ashabá. Her hair is silverish-white. Her name means "Forgetful", and she is slow to answer her followers. When asked a favor she takes her time and answering . She is fond of the color white, and sits by the water with a duck nestled on her lap.

She is the owner of the ducks, swans and geese. She lives in the latrines, cloudy fetid, swampy waters. It is said Asesu' draws away human sorrows in the foul, dirty waters of the gutter.

The fact that she incessantly counts the duck's feathers does not blind her to what takes place in the world: quite the opposite! Asesu' is silently yet consistantly obser ing, keeping track of her omo's deeds both good and bad.

Like Ashaba, Asesu is related with egun and Iku'. She shares a bond with Babaluaye and is said to work with him in the tomb.

Asesu' is the messenger of Olokun whom dhe has a close relationship. She is aldo one of Olodumares most revered messengers.A myth from odu Ofun Obara recalls a time when, alarmed by drought that threatened to annihilate aye', Asesu' became a vulture and flew to orun to implore Olodumares mercy for humankind. As such, she serves as a vital and compassionate intercessor between orun and aye'. Olorun always hears the merciful Asesu's pleas, above and beyond that of the other orishas, with the exception of Obatala'.

Yemayá rules the surface waters of the sea. Olokun rules the deep sea. In some traditions, they are husband and wife. In others, they are the feminine and masculine aspects of the same orisha.

In Yorubaland, Yemayá rules the Ogun River. She rules fresh water, but after the Middle Passage she is associated with the sea, and Olokun absorbed our loses in the deeps. We used to think the deep sea was a dead zone, but it is filled with life, some that we find difficult to understand. It is part of the endless cycle of life, the water cycle.

In ARARA they call her name "evejosia".

Her number is 7. Her colors are blue and white. Saturday is her day.
Some of her attributes are an anchor, life preserver, ships wheel, two oars, sun, half moon, key, boat, and mermaid.

She adorns herself with things from the sea like seashells, sea stones, nets.

ABOUT YEMAYA

Yemayá (also spelled Yemoja, Iemoja, or Yemaya), is one of the most powerful orishas in Santeria. Queen of Abeokutá, who's name comes from the Yorùbá Yemòjá (Yeyé: mother - Omo: son - Eyá: Fish) literally mother of the fish. She is the mother of all creation and rules over motherhood and all the waters of the earth. She gave birth to the stars, the moon, the sun and most of the orishas. Daughter of Olokun, for that reason she is related to the sea.

Yemayá Asesu is Olokun's messenger. She was wife of Obbatala, Orunla, Aggayu, Babalu ayé, Orisha Oko and in one of her ways of Oggun. Sister of Oshún.

Yemayá resides in the life-giving portion of the ocean, although some of her caminos can be found in lagoons or lakes in the forest. She is a loving, nurturing, protective orisha, and a fierce warrior that kills anyone who threatens her children.

Yemaya has many caminos or “roads”. Each road has a slightly different temperament and is found in a different place in nature. All roads of Yemaya are called “Ibú” and each takes a slightly different shade of blue in her eleke.

Her number is the 7 and its multiples. Her color is blue and its tonalities. She is greeted Omío Yemaya Omoloddé! Yemaya Ataramawa!

Olokun is revered as as the ruler of all bodies of water and one of the most commanding Orishas in the Yoruba religion. An androgynous Orisha that can take on any form. The guardian of the deepest depths of the sea, Olokun is the owner of the oceans and all of the riches that they possess. In the Candomblé religion of Brazil, Olokun is venerated as the mother of Yemoja and the owner of the sea.

When someone dies in the sea, rather than immediately beginning to join with their ancestors, they may stay with Olokun until she/he decides to release them. Sailors will give offerings of shells to Olokun and the ancestors in the sea before departing on their voyages.
