ABOUT:
The Seven African Powers, also known in Spanish as "Las Siete Potencias Africanas", are comprised of seven Orishas, revered figures in the syncretized paths of Santeria, Candomble, Vodou, Cuban Ifa and Umbanda religions. They include Elegua, Yemaya, Oshun, Sango, Obatala, Oya (sometimes Orunmila or Ochossi), and Ogun. Often depicted with their images linked together in a chain circling an image of the crucified Jesus, these deities represent all that is sacred and powerful in Santeria. Together, these seven Orishas represent a force that offers guidance and strength through all of life’s trials and tribulations. Anyone can call upon the Seven African Powers guidance individually or collectively, depending on the nature of the issue in question. Orisha may never be asked to aid in endeavors with bad intentions, and intentions must be very clear when petitioning them.
While these seven Orishas are particularly important, they do not represent the entirety of the Orisha pantheon. There are hundreds of Orishas, each governing various aspects of nature, human endeavors, and life events. Some Orishas are well-known and widely worshipped, other Orishas are more regional or have a more specialized focus. The prominence of specific Orishas can also vary between different Yoruba-derived religions and regions. While orisa descend from African diaspora, the "7 African Powers" practice is not a part of traditional Yoruban Isese.
